What Is Post-Nasal Drip?
Your nose and sinuses naturally produce mucus throughout the day. Most of the time, you swallow it without even noticing.
When mucus becomes thicker or there's an increase in production, however, you may begin to feel it draining down the back of your throat. This is commonly referred to as post-nasal drip.
It can leave you with an irritating sensation that makes you want to cough, swallow, or clear your throat repeatedly.
Common Signs of Post-Nasal Drip
Post-nasal drip doesn't feel the same for everyone. Symptoms may include:
Some people have significant throat symptoms without experiencing much nasal congestion at all.
What's Causing All That Drainage?
There isn't just one cause.
Allergies can increase mucus production and nasal inflammation. Colds and other respiratory infections can temporarily increase drainage, while chronic sinus inflammation may cause symptoms that continue much longer.
Other possible contributors can include environmental irritants, dry air, certain medications, and structural problems within the nose or sinuses.
That's why simply treating the throat may not solve the problem.
Could Acid Reflux Be Involved?
Sometimes.
Reflux can irritate the throat and cause symptoms that are surprisingly similar to post-nasal drip, including chronic throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, or the sensation that something is stuck in the throat.
Some people experience laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) without the classic heartburn symptoms they associate with acid reflux.
In other cases, sinus drainage and reflux may both be contributing to throat irritation.
Why Constant Throat Clearing Can Make Things Worse
Here's the frustrating part: the more irritated your throat feels, the more you want to clear it.
But repeatedly clearing your throat can create additional irritation, which makes you feel like you need to clear it again.
It can become a cycle.
If the underlying cause isn't addressed, cough drops, water, or repeatedly clearing your throat may provide only temporary relief.
When Should You See an ENT?
An occasional need to clear your throat isn't usually concerning. But symptoms that persist for weeks, repeatedly return, or interfere with your voice, sleep, or daily activities deserve a closer look.
An ENT evaluation can help determine whether your symptoms may be coming from your nose, sinuses, throat, reflux, allergies, or another underlying condition.
You should also seek medical attention for persistent hoarseness, difficulty or pain with swallowing, coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, a neck mass, or breathing difficulty.
