Balloon Sinuplasty Q&A

What Is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis. Because it requires only a local anesthetic and involves no incisions, Dr. Lapco can conveniently perform it in the office.

This procedure quickly and effectively clears your sinuses, restores normal drainage, and relieves your symptoms.

What Causes Sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when the membranes inside your sinuses become inflamed, trapping mucus and leading to infection.

Sinus infections often start when a virus travels from your nose or throat to your sinuses. While most infections clear up within four weeks, symptoms that persist for 12 weeks or longer indicate chronic or recurrent sinusitis.

You’re more likely to develop chronic sinusitis if you have allergies that cause nasal or throat inflammation. Conditions like nasal polyps or other obstructions can also block your sinuses and increase your risk.

What Symptoms Suggest I Might Need Balloon Sinuplasty?

Common symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Thick, discolored nasal discharge
  • Sinus pain and pressure
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Postnasal drip

If these symptoms persist or frequently recur, balloon sinuplasty may be a good option for you.

What Happens During Balloon Sinuplasty?

During the procedure, you’ll relax in a treatment chair while Dr. Lapco applies a local anesthetic. He then guides a thin, flexible balloon catheter through your nose and into the blocked sinus passage. A small camera on the catheter provides a clear view of the area.

Once the catheter is correctly positioned, Dr. Lapco inflates a medical-grade balloon to gently open and reshape the sinus passage. The sinus is then flushed with saline (salt water) to clear it. Afterward, the balloon is deflated and removed, leaving the sinus open and draining normally.

Balloon sinuplasty provides rapid relief by immediately restoring proper sinus drainage. Since no tissue is cut, recovery is quick, and most patients can resume their regular activities within a few days.

If you’re experiencing persistent congestion and sinus pressure, you may be a good candidate for balloon sinuplasty. Call Dr. Paul Lapco, ENT, or schedule an appointment online to learn more.
